The Explora Model 3A, released by Multichoice on Black Friday, 23 Nov18, is now almost the same size as the single view HD decoder, the model 5S. The images on the left show the size progression, top to bottom, from Explora1, to Explora3 .
Small is not bad; it can be useful when one needs to fit the decoder on a small shelf. What else has changed? Of course, from the Explora1 to Explora2 the hard disc drive dropped from 2Terabytes to 1 Terabyte (1TB), losing half of its capability to store video content. Fortunately the Explora 3A has not cut this any further; it still has 1TB of hard disc space. However, it has lost two very useful features ( I mean, : “WHAT was Multichoice THINKING?????!!!!!”):-
(1) the LCD display has gone, meaning you dont get the familiar sanity check on the front of the decoder telling one which channel one is on or whether on is on standby ; and
(2) The RF OUT and RF IN ports on the rear of the panel have gone ( I can hear 1000 installers screaming 1000 curses! F@##@@@***!!). This means if one wants an RF extension to another room, one has to use a special RF modulator which connects to the AV outputs of the decoder. These add several hundred Rands to the installation and makes for a very messy installation when you have the decoder on a small shelf where it is visible.
Here’s the view of the Explora 3 rear end; note that the Satellite Dish connection ( marked as “Unicable IN”) is now on the extreme left.
Thats all for now; we will give a further update on the Explora3 when we have found something interesting to tell you about it.
