Multichoice has now released its latest single view decoder, which has quite a few changes from the previous versions.
Firstly, the smartcard is now imbedded in the decoder itself, which actually makes a lot of sense, as prior decoders always required the process of marrying the smartcode with the decoder, with a lot of wasted time for users and Multichoice helpdesk staff.
Secondly, the decoder has omitted the RF out port. This is a step backwards, in our opinion, as if one now wants to connect an extra TV point to the decoder ( such as a bedroom TV being connected to the main decoder in the lounge), one has to connect a modulator to the HD 5S. This takes the AV output from the decoder and converts it to an RF output; it is messy – there is an extra unit attached to the decoder and it introduces a multitude of new wiring:
- A power cable which plugs into the USB port of the HD 5S.
- An AV cable which plugs into the AV port of the 5S.
- An infra-red eye cable from the modulator which has to be placed in front of the HD 5S if one wants the remote TV to work with a TV
- Then the RG6 cable form the mudulator to the remote TV.
(If you are having any difficulties with the installation of this, give us a call and we will send one of our DSTV installers out to you).
This decoder forms part of the new Explora styled family of decoders, bringing quite a significant step forward for single-view customers, who can now watch DSTV in high definition.
